One of the most popular tours today in the Odessa region is a trip to Belgorod – Dniester or, as it is also called, Akkerman. The city is 2500 years old, it is among the ten most ancient cities in the world, and, therefore, ranks with Athens, Rome, Jerusalem, Beijing and other cities. Each historical epoch left its mark on it and brought a new name to the city: Ofiussa, Tira, Alba Iulia, Belgorod, Feger-Var, Monkastro, Chetatya-Alba, Akkerman and others. This first of all speaks about the popularity of the city among different nations, which is not surprising, since it was an important trade and craft center. The name Akkerman, which is often used today, was once given to the city by the Turks. The name of Belgorod with the definition of the Dniester city received only in 1944.
